Atty Garfinkel-Berry, MBA:
Hillel Director (She/Her/Hers)
Atty is invested in the students and in ensuring each student voice is heard. Through creating infrastructure, direct student design methodologies, and leadership, Atty has led a visible growth in the Hillel of Northern Nevada. Atty is a strategic planner and a Jewish Communal Services Worker with a background in advocacy, leadership, community support, and Jewish education. With a MBA in Nonprofit Management, Atty is committed to the nonprofit sector’s impact.
While serving on the City of Reno’s Human Right’s Commission, and the Nevada Area Council on Jewish Scouting, Atty is actively building the world she wishes to leave the next generation.

John. N. Louie, PhD: President BOD
Professor John Louie is faculty at the University of Nevada and is the current President/Chairman of the Board of Directors for Hillel of Northern Nevada. Having previously served as the Faculty advisor for many years, John began his term as President in June of 2019. John and his family have lived in the Reno area for many years. John is the former president of Temple Sinai Reno, and is everyone’s friend. Connect with John for a meaningful conversation on geology or Judaism. John’s UNR work in geophysics can be found here.
Hannah Alterwitz: Student Intern,
Peer Mentor (She/Her/Hers)
Hannah is a double major senior at the University of Nevada, Reno and the Student Intern for Hillel of Northern Nevada (2018/19 and 2019/20). She led the student legislative visits to the State Capitol in Carson City while organizing and planned the Student Graduation Gala of 2019. She taught the Student Board Roberts Rules of Order training, and has accomplished no less than 2 programs and 2 collaborative event per year, in addition to helping staff regular programs, acting as a peer mentor for the student board, and offering reports to the 501 (c) 3 Board of Directors. As a Communications, and a Women’s Sudies major we know Hannah will excel. Hannah moved to Reno from Las Vegas to attend UNR, where she and a group of friends founded the first Jewish Sorority in the state, SAEPi.
Aaron Hill, DMA: Faculty Adviser
2019-21, BOD (He/Him/His)
Professor Aaron Hill is a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Oboe and Classical Saxophone at the University of Nevada, Reno and principal oboe of the Wintergreen Festival Orchestra.
Aaron serves the Hillel of Northern Nevada as the faculty adviser to the student board at UNR as well as his department’s representative to the UNR Academic Senate.
Aaron is always working to improve the world and our community. When he is not teaching, guiding college students, or spending time with his wife and son, Aaron can often be found helping people register to vote or engaging in other forms of civic and community service.
